2014 Faces of Resilience Event

The 2014 Faces of Resilience event took place on Wednesday, April 16th at the Hilton Columbus Downtown. This memorable evening supported OSU Harding Behavioral Health’s STAR Program with proceeds benefiting individuals suffering from overwhelming trauma and mental health challenges.

We were pleased to honor Drs. Patricia and Steven Gabbe as the 2014 STAR Award winners. The award annually recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the program and to the trauma field. The Gabbes' contributions have had a tremendous impact on our Medical Center and community and they are very deserving of this award.

Our guests speakers for the evening were Dr. Daniel Reidenberg and Mr. Kevin Hines. Dr. Reidenberg is the Executive Director of SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education), a national non-profit agency working to prevent suicide and help suicide survivors. He also serves as the Managing Director of the National Council for Suicide Prevention and is the US Representative to the International Association for Suicide Prevention. He has received numerous awards and was recently recognized as a “Champion of Change” at The White House by the Obama Administration.

Kevin Hines is one of 33 people to have survived a life-threatening jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge.  He is now an award-winning international speaker, author and mental health advocate. In 2012, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding work as a suicide prevention advocate and speaker.  Cracked…Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt is his first book and was just released with high praise in July of 2013.

2013 WexSTAR Event

On April 25, 2013 The STAR Program continued a partnership with the Wexner Center for the Arts to present An Unforgettable Evening with Natalie Cole. As a special treat, Columbus’ own harmony Project kicked off the night with a mix of song and inspiration from a “200 strong” choir.  The event built upon the success of the 2011 and 2012 successful cross-campus collaborations that featured, respectively, a benefit performance of Anna Deavere Smith’s Let Me Down Easy and An Evening with Carrie Fisher.

Thanks to the generosity of over 1,500 donors, our evening with Natalie Cole was a great success.  Funds raised continue to benefit educational programming at the Wexner Center and STAR clinical services for victims of psychological trauma.  We are grateful for your participation in this unique collaboration bringing together the arts and sciences in a profoundly meaningful way.  Both the Wexner Center and STAR are committed to increasing awareness of, and discourse about, intellectually and socially challenging topics, including mental health and substance abuse and we look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.

We would like to give a special thank you to our honorary event chairs- Irene Adams and Trish Cadwallader.

On February 24, 2011, an extraordinary evening took place at the renovated historic Lincoln Theater. The OSU Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Program joined forces with the Wexner Center for the Arts to present a benefit performance of Anna Deavere Smith’s tour de force, Let Me Down Easy.

This extraordinary event helped to raise awareness and funding for both the STAR Program and the Wexner Center. We are thankful for your shared enthusiasm for this exceptional cross-campus collaboration that brings great artistry together with great medical care to showcase the power of One Ohio State University.

2010 Fundraising Event

On May 5, 2010 over 450 gathered to learn more about the OSU STAR Program and to hear Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut and American Legend, share his story of his heroic mission and the struggle with major depression and alcohol addiction that followed.

The OSU STAR Program would like to thank the following individuals, companies, and foundations for their generous support. We look forward to continuing our work together to improve the lives of trauma victims in our community.
